“I’m so proud my dream has finally come true.

How to hire the right web designer? For this I’ve to quote Jay Gotlz’s blog post You’re The Boss – The High Cost of Bad Hiring from the New York Times.

…and I was going through production managers the way Elizabeth Taylor went through husbands.

Well, Elizabeth Taylor was rich but as a small business owner, you just cannot afford the same mistakes. Before you hire a web designer to craft out your website, here’s a small check list to help you with the decision making.

Ask for their portfolio. Often, by going through their portfolio gives you an idea of their design style and information arrangement on the website. This is important as good web designers should have good style regardless of how technically competent they are. They should always design websites from a user’s point of view and their websites should look professional, clean and clearly presented.

Is the particular web designer willing to quote on whole jobs rather than by page or hourly charge? Quoting per job will make budgeting a lot easier by avoiding untargeted expenses.

Ask about their regular updates or maintenance service as your website will need to be maintained after going live and at some point you may need to update the information on your site to reflect the changes in your business.

Look at their contracts. Who owns the website and domain names? Ideally, as the owner of the business you should own the website and the domain names.

Ask who provides the hosting? Ask if the web designer is a reseller or does he/she hosts the websites on his/her own server? Either one is not a good idea as he/she will be your sole technical support and if he/she falls ill, there is not one else to support you if your site is down.

Besides constructing the website, ask about the web hosting monthly or yearly costs and what they are charging you for it.

Talk to your web designer, discern if you web designer has a flexible approach, is creative and at the same time commercially skilled to help you turn out a successful website for your business.

Upgrade Revamp Your Old Website

Whenever customers approach me about acquiring a new website, their first main concern is the cost. The good news is, thanks to modern technology and the availability of low cost state of the art website templates and software, your business can acquire a new website at an incredible affordable rate.

If you decide to have your website redesigned, now it’s time to take advantage of giving your business branding an overhaul. Consider tying up the design and theme of your website with your marketing accessories such as your business cards, brochures, letterheads, etc. Talk to your web designer who will help you with ideas and suggestions.

Here’s a list of questions to help you think about what you might need for your website:-

What color scheme do you want for your website?

Are you happy with the logo you currently have? Or do you need a new, more powerful logo for a stronger branding?

Do you want to have a new shorter and easier to remember domain name or do you want to keep the old one? In some cases, I advise my clients to do both.

Do you need to change the content frequently? Do you need a cheaper solution such as a Content Management System (CMS) instead of using traditional templates so that you can do your own updates whenever you want?

The Benefits Of A Business Blog

What’s a blog? Basically, a blog is a web page made up of frequently updated posts arranged chronologically showing the latest or most recent publication first.

A blog is an excellent method of sharing company’s expertise, build additional web traffic, and connect with customers.

Every business website should have a blog. A dynamic website is far more engaging to readers than a static one.

Blogs Helps With Your Google Rankings

Search engines like quality fresh contents. Your blog gives you the opportunity to create landing pages within your website based on your business niche keywords and phrases.

Choosing the right keywords for your business is fundamental for your site to rank well in Google, Yahoo, Bing or any major search engines.

Beware also that generating poor random or repetitive content can harm your site ranking.

Blogs Will Keep Your Customers Interest In Your Site

The beauty of a blog is you don’t need a webmaster to manage your posts and it’s as easy as creating Word documents. By creating fresh contents and updating your website with new articles, it motivates your customers to check your website more frequently.

Writing for a business blog is different from a personal blog. The content that you generate should be about what your readers want to read and information that is useful for them. For example, this is a blog post and the information I’ve gathered here is for the benefit of my clients and visitors coming to my website. I don’t necessarily want to advertise about my web design services here in my blog posts, but the aim will be to associate Meerwebs with a sense of quality and knowledge.

Setting Up Your Business Email Accounts

If you’re a small business and you want to look professional communicating with clients, it’s better to set up a proper business email address than a personal one.

If you are having a new website designed, make sure you ask your web designer about setting up email accounts and forwarders for your business.

If you don’t have a website, you can still have a professional emailing address. All you need is to sign up for a domain name with a host that offers email account facilities.

After setting up your new business email (eg. contact@yourdomain.com), you can have all your emails from that account forwarded to other accounts and those outside the domain if the need arises. Forwarding sensitive information across the internet should have an encrypted emailing system. If you’re not sure how this works, ask your web designer.

Set Up An Email Signature

Depending on your Country, State, Trading Status, etc, the law may require all correspondence including emails to include your business full contact details.

For emails, it’s easy to set up an email signature to automatically include all the contact details at the end of every business email you send.

By: Vukan Karadzic

What makes one logo better than another?

Simplicity.
A good logo works in the simplest form. It is a memorable representation of your brand and inspires confidence in your customers. It should be fresh and original — without visual cliches or amateur effects. A logo is well-designed when it looks as good on a business card as it does on a web page or a billboard. To be functional, a good logo must reduce well to simple black & white or grayscale for use on faxes or in newspaper ads. The best logos are elegantly simple.

Why do you need a logo?
In a way, a logo is a visual shortcut to who you are. Your logo will establish your corporate identity and credibility. It builds loyalty among your clients and employees. You invest in your brand image every time your logo is displayed on a Web page, on a sign, or in an advertisement.

A professionally designed logo enables you to be immediately recognizable and must be unique, memorable and simple. Such a logo will become one of your most valuable corporate assets over time.

How does your current logo stack up?
Run down this logo quick test:

Does the logo have immediate impact?

Is it good to look at?

Is it distinctive?

Does it create or evoke a positive image?

Does it accurately represent the organization or business?

Is it straightforward?

Is it comprehensible?

Is it memorable?

Is it flexible?

Does it copy well?

Will it hold up to both large and small scale use?

Will it wear well over time?

Will you be proud to use it?
